This morning President Obama said that mandatory voting "would be transformative" in this country and it would "counteract money" and its influence in the political process.
Twenty-six countries currently feature mandatory voting, which is usually enforced by a fine or the loss of government benefits. (Republicans often want to tie welfare benefits to seemingly unrelated factors such as drug use. I wonder how they would feel about using this method to force recipients to vote.) I have long been very excited about mandatory voting, but have considered this a pie-in-the-sky dream that would never even get a hearing in the United States. It was so exciting to see the president himself advocating at least the discussion of such a policy.
It's a good idea. Think about it...then discuss amongst yourselves.
