Yesterday's Salon column from Thomas Frank was about very serious subjects, like torture and the decline of American journalism. But his comment about the New Republic was funny. (I swear I've stopped writing about that magazine--other people keep bringing it up!) Frank refers to the magazine's former owner Martin Peretz who, by all accounts, held objectionable views about race but, by most accounts, still put together a pretty good magazine. (Chris Hughes is the tech mogul who purchased The New Republic a couple of years ago.) I quote:
The bigoted writings of the magazine’s owner in the pre-Hughes era were always a shocking thing to find among its delicately reasoned essays, a big turd rising up through the eggnog.
And the eggnog reference even incorporates a holiday theme. Merry Christmas everybody!
